As an independent animation filmmaker, Nelson has won awards in the Philippines and has received citations from international animation festivals. Nelson specializes in Character Design, Layout, and Paperless 2D Animation. In 2018, Nelson completed his graduate studies  (MFA in Film and Animation) at Rochester Institute of Technology through the Fulbright program.
